Twitter's has just revamped its mobile application, which was officially launched on Tuesday. This new update now allows Twitter users to send photos to one another via direct message.

This new update now makes it much easier for Twitter users to send private messages that contain photos. That makes Twitter a much more fully featured private-messaging service.


The New Foursquare - Your Personal Concierge in Your Pocket

This week we have seen Foursquare roll lout a completely new look and feel update for the iSO7, that optimises  both push notifications and personal recommendations.

The new update allows Foursquare users to receive information and tips about what is going on in the area they have checked into. It also now asks the Foursquare user questions in the upper slide screen about the check in. All you need to do is tap the tab and then answer the question and chose one of the options available. Quick, simple which makes the users more inclined to engage and participate.


Instagram Adds Instagram Direct

Instagram has just added a new feature to its services. You can now send photos and video directly to selected friends. Traditionally every post would be seen by people who followed you. With this new feature you can select up to 15 people that you want to receive the image or video and only they will be able to see it.

Now When you open your Instagram, you will now see a new icon (tray shape) in the top right corner of your home feed. Tap it to open your inbox where you’ll see photos and videos that people have sent to you.


Facebook Mirrors Twitter When it Comes to Trending

Facebook announces a new feature called trending. This is similar to what you will find on Twitter, which shows uses of the social channel what are currently the most discussed topics on the site.

Facebook has rolled out this new feature to Australia, Britain, Canada and India with the US coming online over the next couple of weeks. Facebook has not advised when the other countries will be coming online with this new feature.


Launching Feb. 3 Paper- Facebooks Curated Visual News Reader

Paper, a standalone iOS news reader app it revealed today that delivers human and algorithm-curated full-screen articles and photos in categories you select like Tech, Travel, Sport.  It  is the first app out of Facebook Creative Labs, an initiative to let small teams within Facebook build standalone mobile experiences and fulfills Zuckerberg’s need for Facebook to become the future for news the modern age’s newspaper.

Microsoft Buys $15 Million Stake in Foursquare

Microsoft has  invested $15 million in Foursquare. This strategic partnership will definitely assist Microsoft and Windows-powered phones with an enormous amount information about where to eat, what to see and do, where to stay for people on the move.

It is rumored that  data drawn from Foursquare and its 30+ million users, (and their more than 3 billion check-ins to date on the app)  will appear in a voice-activated assistant, to be released in the future which will go head-to-head with Apple's Siri technology.

This partnership will give Foursquare a new revenue stream and will provide it with additional expertise and possibly more features to its mobile phone app in the future.


Virgin Atlantic Staff Now Check You in with Google Glass

Virgin Atlantic is currently trialing the use of Google glass or a Sony SmartWatch 2 with its business class passengers flying Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow.  Both devices operate via a purpose-built dispatch app built by the Virgin Atlantic passenger service system and SITA.

This app is designed to manage all the task allocations and concierge availability. As the business class passengers arrive at the upper wing class, the app will push individual passenger information directly to the assigned concierge via Google Glass or Sony Smart Watch.

In other developments, the company is also testing iBeacon technology at Heathrow Airport, allowing iOS users to receive flight updates and offers while at the airport.

 


81% of SMB'S using Social Media

The latest research from LinkedIn has found that the majority of SME businesses are moving into social media channels for growth opportunities.

According to a recent LinkedIn stud which surveyed 998 businesses, roughly 81% of SMBs are using social media, and of those using social media, 94% do so for marketing purposes.

 


Facebook - New Pages Structure for Global Brands

Facebook  announces a new page structure for  Global Pages. It is claimed that the new structure will  provide the best, localised experiences for a brand’s customers, and is available to all brands working with Facebook. Facebook users will now be directed to the best version of a companies  Page based on the country the user is in. This will allow the Facebook user  to see the brands localised content of features such as  cover photos, profile photos, page apps, milestones,  and news feed stories, etc.  while still remaining part of the global brands community

 


Pintrest offers its recent updates to mobile users exclusively.

Pinterest updated both its mobile and iPad apps recently, offering some of its most recent product updates to mobile users.

One of these new features was allowing its iOS and ANdroid apps with the ability to support GIFs. This will allow the millions of GIF to be accessable to mobile devises. 

The company also recently unveiled Place Pins, or pins that allow images to contain geo-location information.

Pintrests idea was for people to utlize this feature for planning and showing trips and holiday photos. This is a similar feature that is available via Instagram.

Pinterest states  that there are more than 200 million Place boards on the their platform, and that over 1.5 million new places are pinned each day. Pintrest claims that users have already pinned more than 750 million places since November.

With Place pins Pinterest could introduce a new revenu stream and use this like Foursquare giving people posing or checking in special offers from restaurants, retailers or companies nearby.

 


Tweet costs a Tweeter $105,000

A secondary school teacher has been awarded $105,000  by District Court Judge Michael Elkiam. This Australian landmark case is the first time a social media  Twitter defamation case has reached to trial in Australia.

Back in November 2012 a person posted a series of defamatory comments on Twitter  and Facebookabout a High School Teacher who had replaced the Tweeters father in the role of High School Music teacher.

This decision is a reminder to brand owners, company owners as well as individuals that social media networks, whether large or small are publishing platforms in the eyes of the law and defamation on these channels can result in high penalties for people  who are proven to have defamed.

This is a timely reminder to all Directors, Company Owners and Boards need to ensure that they have social media policies in place for their staff.

Pintrest recently announced that everyone can now create unlimited number of secret boards.

The beauty of secret boards, is that you can use them for birthday parties, holiday planning, keep track of gifts, wedding planning, birthdays, getting inspiration for a website or blog you are working on or a new business venture,  as well as allowing you to work on a project that is not ready to share with the social world.

Something that Instagram has over other social players is the ability of its audience to engage with other Instagramer’s. Facebook buys Oculus VR for $2 billion moving into social virtual reality

Facebook's is backed up its recent purchase of a messaging app with another acquisition having just  paid 2 billion for Oculus VR, the maker of a virtual reality gaming headset called Oculus Rift.  Oculus has sold 75,000 pre-orders for development kits, which cost $350, giving it approximately $26 million in income.

The deal which involves the payment of  $400 million in cash, with 23.1 million shares of Facebook common stock valued at $1.6 billion.  In addition, the deal includes a $300 million earn-out in cash and stock.

Latest Facebook News - Shared Photo Albums Launched

Facebook have recently announced that  it will now let multiple users upload images to the same photo album. 

Now Facebook users can create and share a photo album with up to 50 contributors, who can each upload up to 200 photos on to the folder.

To keep the collaboration going, these contributors can in turn invite others to the album. Album creators still retain control over privacy settings and who has access to the images.

Its interesting to note that images and video are far more likely to be shared that simple text based images.

This  feature will  prove popular with users wanting to share snapshots from a speacial event such as a 21st or weddings and other events. 

Facebook are obviously looking at taking some users away from Flikr.
