Facebook Mirrors Twitter When it Comes to Trending

Facebook announces a new feature called trending. This is similar to what you will find on Twitter, which shows uses of the social channel what are currently the most discussed topics on the site.

Facebook has rolled out this new feature to Australia, Britain, Canada and India with the US coming online over the next couple of weeks. Facebook has not advised when the other countries will be coming online with this new feature.

With Facebook version of Trending there are a couple of different features. The first incorporates a personalisation feature, which will show users trending topics that matter to them based on their identified interests. The second is a descriptive feature briefly summarizing why the current topic is trending. It is also interesting to note that trending cannot be turned off from each person’s news feed.

Facebook also recently announced that it had adjusted its News Feed to prioritise news over other types of content. With their latest Trending update, Facebook is positioning itself as a key destination by its users for the latest news and trends that fit the interests of each user.

It has been rumoured that Facebook is creating a news service app, which will compete with Flipboard (which currently delivers news content to its uses in the form of a personalised magazine where the user defines the subject areas they want to receive the latest news from).
